  • Medical Assistant Program

    What exactly can I expect from the Medical Assistant Program?

    ms1The Medical Assistant program is designed to train students in all of the relevant aspects of medical office management including reception, booking appointments, records management, informatics, insurance billing, preparing patients for physical examinations, and minor surgeries, performing specialized medical tests including urinalysis, and collecting biological specimens, phlebotomy, EKG, limited X Rays, and processing and recording pharmacological data. Graduates of this program will be prepared and possess the skills and hands on experience to work at the entry level in medical offices, clinics and various medical practices. This program is also offered via online where more than 50% of courses are offered either online or via hybrid delivery.

    *Effective for all students enrolling after April 1, 2016.

    WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

    While the medical assistant program may be a great option for you if you posses the following qualities:

    • Strong communication skills
    • Dependability
    • Can handle high levels of stress
    • Can be empathetic to patients and other people
    • Strong level of integrity
    • Self-control in intense situations
    • Able to remain courteous even in the worst of times

    Since you will be working in the medical field with patients, you will need to be able to pay attention to detail which will be part of your courses taught during your medical assisting program.

    When you choose FVI, you will be able to choose a schedule that best fits your needs such as:

    • On campus day classes
    • On campus evening classes

    Due to the need for hands on learning, your class sizes will be relatively small. You will have assigned coursework that will allow you to make the most of your medical assistant program.

    Once you finish the coursework, you will have the option of taking a statewide exam to become certified.

    All programs will teach you the skills of medical assisting.

    • Certificate and diploma programs-May take 12 to 18 months to complete

    Great jobs are available after you complete medical assistant school. When you choose FVI as your medical assistant school in Miami, they will help you with job placement once you have graduated.

    Our medical assisting program will offer you certification preparation that will allow you to be ready for your exam (if you plan on taking it).  FVI even offers opportunities for internships or externships so that you can learn even more outside of the classroom in real world scenarios. FVI that will offer you a variety of classes that can fit around your schedule and will allow you to get the most out of your training.

    What kind of job can I get as a graduate?

    Our Medical Assistant program provides students with the knowledge and training to become an entry-level medical assistant professional in most healthcare facilities. Our graduates may find employment at medical clinics, hospitals, physician’s offices, and even in healthcare facilities for specialized medicine such as optometry, gynecology, and pediatrics. If you want to gain a position as a medical assistant professional in a rising career field, Florida Vocational Institute’s Medical Assistant program is the path to take!

    Do I need to be certified?

    No, you do not need to be certified, but Florida Vocational Institute strongly advises all of our students to take the medical assistant certification exam (CCMA), which we administer at our learning facility.

    HOW TO BECOME A MEDICAL ASSISTANT

    Obtaining your medical assistant certificate is more than just training and learning from a book. You will need to be ms2professional in order to succeed as a medical assistant and you will want to have all of the qualities that employers look for such as politeness and maintaining a neat appearance. An employer will look for someone who can follow directions, understand the importance of HIPAA, and help patients feel comfortable during their visits to the doctor.  Medical assistants are required to be able to complete multiple tasks everyday while on the job. While some tasks will completely dependent on the work setting that you have chosen the same skills will still apply. Some medical assistants will be in charge of maintaining a medical office that is both organized and efficient. On the other hand, there are medical assistants who will be hired and trained to work directly with patients and perform clinical duties.

    Once you have completed your coursework, you begin an internship or externships. This is program that usually last 3 to 6 weeks and will allow you to put the skills that you have learned through your medical assistant courses to work in the real world. You can complete this internship in the front office, the back office, or both.

    During this part of your program, you will be able to work with real patients and you will be using all of the information that you have learned through your courses. In your medical assistant career, you will want to do your best work possible to receive a high grade from your supervisor. For this reason, you will need to treat it like a real job.
