  • PHARMACY TECHNICIAN PROGRAM

    WHAT EXACTLY CAN I EXPECT FROM THE PHARMACY TECHNICIAN PROGRAM?

    The Pharmacy Technician program provides instruction in how to assist the pharmacist in the packing and distribution of medication. Graduates can find employment in hospitals (private and government), nursing care facilities, private and chain drug stores, drug manufacturers, wholesale drug houses, and health maintenance organizations. Students will also study the professional and technical skills necessary for direct employment as a pharmacy technician

    When you complete the Pharmacy Technician program at FVI you will have mastered many skills including:

    • Ability to identify drugs by both generic and brand name
    • Ability to calculate (with different measurement systems) the correct dosage and solution strength
    • Ability to perform techniques and procedures to compound and mix different drugs
    • Ability to define ethics and explain the laws that apply to the practice of pharmacy
    • Ability to perform functions that are connected to institutional and clinical distribution systems

    After completion, you will also open the doors to many employment opportunities in a multitude of settings such as:

    • Drug Stores
    • Grocery Store Pharmacies
    • Hospital Pharmacies
    • Hospital Pharmacies

    Once you enter the workforce, you will be assisting pharmacists with compounding and distributing medications, helping them prepare mixtures for intravenous use, and other services that may be required in that pharmacy setting. FVI’s pharmacy technician program will allow you to work in a job position that will be very rewarding and always evolving. In addition to that, you will find that being a pharmacy technician will offer you a very stable, and secure work environment.

    You will be the contact between patient, doctor, insurance company, and other medical professionals. Much like the pharmacist you visit at your local CVS or Walgreens, you will be the person who receives the prescription from patients and then verify the prescription in order to prepare the medication. At Florida Vocational Institute, you will be able to choose classes that fit around your schedule and have access to job placement upon completion

    GRADUATES CAN FIND EMPLOYMENT IN THE FOLLOWING ENVIRONMENTS:

    • Hospitals (private and government)
    • Nursing care facilities
    • Private and chain drug stores
    • Drug manufacturers
    • Wholesale drug houses
    • Health maintenance organizations

    This program prepares students for a position as a pharmacy technician. A diploma will be awarded upon successful completion of this program.
    Students for this program must wear proper medical attire. Uniforms are purchased by the student.

    DO I NEED TO BE CERTIFIED?

    Student must become registered as Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Florida Board of Pharmacy before he/she can begin working in their field of training in the State of Florida. All employers will conduct a background check and drug screen for employment in the State of Florida.

    HOW CAN YOU BECOME A PHARMACY TECHNICIAN?

    With the pharmacy tech program in Miami at FVI, you will take a multitude of courses that will offer you the knowledge and skills that will be necessary to succeed in the workforce. These classes will offer you preparation for the following:

    • Providing medications to patients
    • Mixing solutions for intravenous use
    • Counting pill tablets
    • Labeling prescription bottles properly
    • Understanding of how to receive prescriptions electronically from offices
    • Understanding of how to enter prescriptions into the computer
    • Understanding of how to read written prescriptions
    • Ability to verify prescriptions
    • Ability to stock prescriptions
    • Ability to track inventory of medications

    In addition to the skills, you will also gain hands-on experience that will truly allow you to be successful as a pharmacy technician.

    Once you have completed our approved accredited training program at FVI, you can become certified by taking a certification exam that is approved by the State Board of Pharmacy in Florida. You can only take this exam once you have completed your training courses at FVI.  In order to prepare for the certification, FVI offers 40 hours of preparation to ensure you are prepared!

    Following certification and in order to work, you will be required to get licensed. To obtain this license you will need to be able to complete the following requirements:

    • Be at least 17 years of age
    • Submit a written application requesting your registration
    • Submit proof that you have completed your pharmacy tech program at an accredited state approved school like FVI
    • Submit your fee along with a copy of your social security card

    After you’ve entered the workforce, you will need to complete a continuing education course and renew your license every other year.

    HOW CAN YOU CHOOSE A PHARMACY TECH SCHOOL THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

    When you decide that you are ready to begin your future as a pharmacy technician, Florida Vocational Institute will help you every step of the way. Typically students complete the program in a year (or less). This program will offer you the education and training skills that are needed to pass the certification exam.     • Pharmaceutical Technology

    Once you complete your program, you will be offered job placement assistance through FVI. You may be able to find entry-level positions in institutions such as:

    • Mail order pharmacies

    Once you finish your class work and learn your hands on skills in the lab setting, you will be required to complete an externship. This will allow you to use the skills and knowledge that you have obtained and utilize it in real world situations.

The median salary for a pharmacy technician according to Bureau of Labor Statistics is $30,410 per year and will vary depending on your placement and can always be negotiated. This job field is expected to rise faster than the average of all occupations in next 5 years. There will be a large demand for graduates of pharmacy technician school due to people living longer and their need for medications as they age.
