Becoming a pharmacy technician is far from a lofty goal – it is an easy field to get into and a few steps below a full-fledged pharmacy technician. So here’s the question: how do you obtain certification as a pharmacy technician? What steps do you need to take? Today we’re going to cover a few of those steps including pharmacy tech schools. At the end of the day we want you to be certified and ready to jump into the workforce!
Post-Secondary Education
Your first step toward a brand-new career in this field will be completing a postsecondary education at an accredited pharmacy technician school. Most of the available programs can be completed in a year or less. Keep in mind however that if you want to take it to the next level by obtaining an associate degree you will need to spend two years in training. Your coursework will cover a wide range of subjects and variations, which includes both practical and technical training. You will cover the following areas when you are undergoing training:
- Pharmacy Law
- Pharmacology
- Pharmacy Ethics
- Anatomy
- Physiology Medical Terminology
- Pharmaceutical Calculations
This might sound like a lot to take on, but these are all skills that you will be using every day during your career and they will take you far.
On the Job Training
Most states do allow students to complete the job training which means not enrolling in post-secondary education. Instead, they could complete a structured training program at a retail drugstore assuming that the store has partnered with the school.
Becoming Certified
Depending on the state that you are in, you may need to become certified in order to take up a job as a pharmacy technician. It is important to note that there are some states that do not require this type of certification but there is a good chance that any employer you try to apply with will require you to be certified and to have good references. Your time in school isn’t just for learning, it’s for building up references and making connections within the medical industry. You will have a much better chance of getting a job if you have a medical professional backing you all the way.
Define your Specialty
Once you finish pharmacy technician training you will be tasked with choosing where you want to work. There are so many different places to choose from and your training will prepare you for all of them. Some of the locations you could find yourself working in would include a retail drugstore, a hospital pharmacy, and much more. There are also many different roles that you could find yourself filling, for example, you could be an operations technology or a general pharmacy technician. The opportunities are virtually endless!
